Retirement Horizon

Explore the retirement income your savings could provide, or work backwards from your goal to an annual savings plan.

Ready to plan withdrawals? Open the Retirement Income Sequencer

Results update automatically as you change inputs; no calculate button is needed. In “Find savings needed” mode, your required annual savings appear directly below this panel. Both gross and net income are always shown. The target chart and savings calculation use your selected goal basis. Required savings aim to meet that target in every retirement year, including years before government benefits begin.

Planning assumptions, not a guarantee

Risk profiles use illustrative nominal annual returns before fees: conservative 3%, moderately conservative 4%, balanced 5%, growth 6%, aggressive 7%. Pessimistic and optimistic views subtract/add your scenario spread each year. These are deterministic examples, not probabilities, historical fund performance, or guaranteed outcomes.

Annual contributions occur at year end. Percentage contributions use working base salary, excluding bonuses; bonus and work schedule affect the savings-affordability comparison. Registered contributions are capped at the annual room you enter, with overflow moved to non-registered. No RRSP refund reinvestment, contribution-room carryforward, employer matching, or payroll deductions are assumed.

CPP/QPP and OAS entries are your personal annual estimates at 65 in today's dollars, not maximum entitlements. Eligibility, residency, and earnings history are not inferred. Benefits follow assumed inflation and selected start-age factors. QPP early reductions range from 0.5% to 0.6% per month; verify your statement. OAS includes the age-75 increase and income-tested recovery.

Tax uses the site's 2025/2026 Canadian schedules with projected 2% annual bracket indexation, applicable age/pension credits, and 50% inclusion of realized capital gains. Adjusted cost bases may exceed market values. Proportional sales realize gains or losses across non-registered accounts; net capital losses carry forward within the projection to offset later capital gains, not pension or other ordinary income. Prior-year loss deductions do not reduce OAS recovery income. No loss carrybacks, pre-existing loss balances, or superficial-loss adjustments are modeled. Income splitting, GIS, non-registered annual distributions, ongoing dividend taxes, employment CPP/EI premiums, RRIF minimums, and estate taxes are excluded. RRSP withdrawals from 65 are treated as RRIF income. Employer shares and other savings are treated as non-registered investments.

Duration mode draws down each account through the selected end age, assuming constant returns. Fixed-percentage mode uses the retirement-opening balance, optionally inflation adjusted, and can deplete early. Annuity mode converts all savings at retirement into fixed annual payments using a user-entered payout rate, not a market quote; no residual capital is retained. Non-registered annuity payments are conservatively taxed in full; TFSA-funded payments are treated as tax-free cash for illustration. Actual annuity tax treatment depends on the contract.

Pension factors and pre-65 bridges are editable illustrative assumptions, not plan-specific estimates. Consult your pension provider and a qualified financial/tax adviser before acting.
